Are we able to heat memory wire for:

(1) Flattening or to create different designs on earrings/bracelets?

(2) Making the ends for looped earrings so as to create an all-in-one fastener for pierced earrings etc?

Heating Memory Wire
by: Christine

Memory wire is spring wire and as far as I know you can;t anneal it (soften it) to the extent that you could flatten it.

However, it doesn’t hurt to experiment! Why not give it a try and see what happens?

As to question 2, I’m not sure exactly what you mean. Do you mean to form the wire into kidney wire earrings? My gut answer is no, you wouldn’t be able to, but I have never tried that either so I suggest you give that a try too.

I do know this: Memory wire will respond to heat to make it easier to bend the wire with chain-nose or flat-nose pliers and turn a loop with your round-nose pliers. But that only applies to the bending you do at the end of the wire, not to forming the wire into different shapes.

You might be onto something there though for the earring wires. Let us know if you try it and can give a definitive answer!
